Fusible Link:

O.K. I'm learning so for those of you like me, here is a great web page that I found which tells you a bit about a fusible link:

http://www.carcare.org/Electrical/fusible_link.shtml

It sounds like something that I should put on my 2 guage wire from the battery to the alternator. I am not worried about the accident because the alternator is going to stop so that isn't much of a concern.

It looks like the best location would be to put a fusible link right where the wire goes to the battery at about 200 amps. That would allow the alternator to go to full capacity and the battery can easily handle that. Anything above and then you start getting into the alternator going bad and it's a safety situation. I doubt the wire would ever get too hot so that won't be an issue.

The 160 amp "Bosch" version came into play in 05. Previous to that most were AD 233 105A and AD244 "Delco" versions 130a, 145a. That 160a is max output at 2200 + RPM. These units here are running on the AD244 145A platform but completely gutted and custom built to perform at 250 amps hot. at max output 2200 + RPM without sacraficing low end (idle) 600-700 RPM outputs, right around 135 amps "each". That is 500 amps combined max output and 250 to 270 amps in idle !!!!

Hope this helps

Hmm, I'm a layman. Impressed, but in short, custom alternator.

I have a feeling there might be some interior electronics that are going along with all this!

Techno jabber...LOL... I apologize. When I talk it all day long on the phone it's kinda hard not to type it.

anyway, no interior electronics. It is plug and play.

Sorry, I said that wrong. What I meant to say was that if your putting out that kind of serious alternator power, chances are that Tahoe has a serious sound system, and/or video system and or other goodies on it! I'm trying to think why else would you want to kick out that much power!

Okay...so I'm confused. I'm not too technical...but some folks on here feel it is not necessary to fuse the ADDITIONAL wire from the positive post of the battery to the alternator, and some people believe that we should fuse it. Are you going to fuse yours Mike or we can run the Big 3 without fusing anything...I don't want the hoe burnin down on me.

I am definitely going to fuse mine!

Do I know for a fact that it is absolutely needed, no. I do know that it doesn't cost all that much and it's simply a safeguard that I can afford to put on the cable. I think we're talking less than $50. bucks here so it's a nice dinner, or a fusible link as an additional safety on my hoe. I'll go for the fuse. Can't hurt, can only help!

I agree...it definitely won't hurt. Are you going to use a 200amp ANL fuse to fuse yours?

Oh, gotcha. This system was designed for limo applications. All Vortec from 4.8 to 5.7 from 99 to 07 so far. Two Batts, two alts. Seperate the load from the OE functions. You could run two stock alts if that's what you require for a smaller load.

Long time watcher first time poster.

but as for the fusible linlk that is Correct. It will usually say it on the wire.

The fusible link is a short section of wire that has a smaller diameter than the rest of the circuit. When current flow in the circuit exceeds that of the fusible link, the wire melts and interrupts the circuit. The capacity of fusible links is usually 30 amps or more than that of standard fuses. If you pull the link out you need to fuse it.

Good luck
