Belt and pully issue

Ok so , I have recently inherited my step dad's 2 ton chevy . 454. I replaced the altenater on it but I took off the pully of the septer belt now I can not get it straight enough to latch back on . I'm stuck like chuck . I can't seem to find any diagrams on it nor is it on the truck since my dad didn't need it he was a mechanic n I didn't get a chance to learn this part before he left this world . I did take some pics of what it is I'm working with so hopefully you guys can lend Mr some advice on what I can do to fix it n some tips on what not to ever do if I do this again done the road on alternators .

That looks like the tensioner, replace it with an AC Delco part.

Yes a tensioner. Well it fit on smoother? I can't it this one in the hole to fit back on .

If it was in the hole before you took it off then it should go back in the same hole. The hole is to help locate it for correct mounting so it has the correct tension on the spring load on the belt. If the locating nub on the back of tensioner is the same size as the hole then it should fit. Hold your tongue differently when trying it again.

The belt is really tight, I can not pull it by hand onto the the hole , it's the same one I took off it wasn't broke or anything just un tightened it when I replaced the altenater on it . Now I can not get it back on right lol .

You are not supposed to put the belt on the tensioner and then try to mount the tensioner. The belt stays off, mount the tensioner and then use the correct tool-ratchet or wrench-to unload the spring tension of the arm of the tensioner and then slip the belt over the pulley and then release the tool to allow the spring tension to tighten the belt. The tensioner never should have been removed to begin with to get the belt off.

Oh ok that makes a lot sense now . Yea not taking the belt on ever again lol .

That must have been scary to unbolt that tensioner with the belt still on it and then at the end of the bolt threads the tensioner just flew off. Dangerous. You should always check here first if you haven't done some of these mechanical things before.
