Congrats on your new Z71! Put up some pictures when you get the chance.

For the most part these are pretty solid trucks. The two main issues people run into are the instrument clusters going bad (but they are covered up to 70k miles of 7 years) and the intermediate steering shaft, you might hear a rattle coming from the steering column on bumps, which is not covered under warranty. It's not a safety issue, the noise can just be a pain. You can either lube up the steering shaft or replace it alltogether. I'm about to need my second ISS (at 39k) and just had my instrument cluster replaced a few thousand miles ago.

Enjoy your new truck, they're great.

have an 04 Z71 myself... love the 'hoe to death. the two things are exactly what you need to keep your eyes open for, both problems have happened in mine, as well a few other issues in the front end. Also, the tranny can be a problem at higher milage (so i have heard and read) but not nearly as common as the previosly mentioned problems. right now my oil pressure gauge is reading all over the board (going to rebuild my cluster to make it an escalade cluster soon which will fix this problem) also my intermediate shaft is all effed, luckily for me i bought my truck from a dodge dealership and their warranty is covering this one! :)

all in all i am completly happy with my 'hoe

The climate control actuators tend to fail, allowing unusually hot air to blow out of the vents.
The intstrument clusters can fail too. The symptoms can be things like the speedometer getting stuck ect.
In my particular truck, the FM/AM tuner failed in the radio. I now have a new one.

As stated above, the transmissions are not a strong point but as long as they are not put through alot of abuse then they should last awhile. The mechanic that changed my fluid 10k miles ago saw no shavings. A friend of mine drives an '01 Burban with 200k miles and it is still solid as ever. And he drives far more aggressive than I do haha.
