I am the original owner of a 1999 chevy tahoe 2dr LS. I just hit 90k and for the last 10k keep smelling dex cool. Changed radiator @ 80k which stopped leak but still smell. No visible signs of leaking and no apparent fluid missing from radiator. Also no visible signs of dex cool in oil. Don't laugh now but I am a white collar don't know crap about fixing cars guy, just know what I like. My mechanic is telling me to dump it because the dex cool is eating away the gaskets and that is why I smell it. He refused to fix them because he says if he fixes the head gasket there will be more failures of other gaskets in the future and that this will be a never ending bill. He is like family so I do trust him, he has never ever screwed me in 17 years. What would you guys advise? Thanks in advance and I am glad I found this forum. My intend was to keek this truck forever, it replaced my 1964 chevelle ss which 20 years ago I had to let go for monetary reasons. Thanks again.

IMHO, you're going to need a coolant pressure test. This will determine where your leak/leaks are.

Yanno, a lot of gaskets do not last forever. If a head gasket goes out, or at the worst a cracked head, you replace most of the top end gaskets anyway. If you use a quality gasket and get rid of the Dexcool sh!t and go with the tried and true green stuff or the new hotness yellow G-05, you should be very well set.
