I've replace them in other vehicles, but not in a Tahoe yet.

What makes you think it's the compressor?

just the fact that i know theres enough freon or whatever the gas is and comparing it to my fathers truck, i cant hear the sound of the compressor turning off and on. But after taking a closer look i think it might just be rusted closed almost (i got the truck of a couple who had it sitting in their driveway for 2 years)

It's very easy to change the compressor, just make sure you change the dryer and orifice tube, too. And remember to have the system evacuated and vacuumed first. Of course you will want to check your sensors first to make sure they're not faulty before you change your compressor, as it may be a $10 sensor.

Power to the Compressor?

Check the pressure switches, one on the accumulator, one on the compressor itself. Should be able to check continuity across the switches with the truck off. If you get continuity then the switch is "on", meaning the system is pressurized, and the compressor should run. If you get no continuity, the switch is "off" and your pressure is to low for the system to run. If you hook the lines up to a gauge and enough gas is present, then you have a bad pressure switch, replace it for $25. There should be a schrader valve that closes off the system when the switch is unscrewed. You can jump a busted pressure switch or override an "off" switch, to see if the compressor comes on, just don't run it long otherwise you could hurt the system.

Just because there's gas in the line doesn't mean there's enough. And, there's a high and low side, unless you checked both schrader valves one side could be out of gas.

1995 - the gas or refridgerant could either be R-12 "Freon" and expensive and illegal for the consumer to replace in most states, or R-134a available in most automotive stores. Your engine compartment should say which it uses, check the top of the accumulator. The two gases aren't compatible so don't interchange. There are crossover kits, but it requires the evacuation, cleaning of your current system as different oils are used, and a vacumn to be set.

Good luck.

I've got an A/C problem myself - the Back AC works great! the front a/c blows air out of it, that feels like just outside air.. - My AC was complelty out of Freeon I refilled it to 45psi (the guage i was using said this was the MAX) and the back a/c started working good.. the front no.. notta.. - anyone got a reccomended A/C psi?

Front/Back AC

45 psi, I can't remember the actual recommended, search around the forums, but 45 psi sounds pretty full for the low side. I only have a 2-door so not sure how the rear AC works. Is it a seperate compressor and all, or is air just diverted from the front evaporator to the rear vents? If it's a single compressor system, and the rear is blowing cold, then your AC system is fine. Maybe you have a vacumn line loose or a electo switch burnt out (not sure if the vents are vacumn or electronic controlled) on the front vent diverters. I know when I turn on the AC I hear the vents shift.

Good luck.

I'm pretty sure that all vehicles sold in the US had to be using r134a for the 1994 model year. So any 94 or later vehicle should be using r134a. 93 or earlier could be using either, but it's been my experience with GM vehicles that they used r12 right up through the 93 model year. They didn't want to re-tool until they absolutely had to. But to be sure, look at the sticker on the compressor. There should also be a sticker somewhere in the engine bay that says what type of freon the system uses.

fyi: Both r12 and r134a are freon. But most people call r12 freon, and r134a refrigerant. Freon is a trademarked name for CFC's and HCFC's sold by Dupont.

Front AC

Sounds like a switch or vacumn line to me. Do you hear the vents moving or feel the air flow change out the front vents when you turn on the AC?

Well, before i put freeon in the system the air coming out was very hot, now it is just like an ambient air.. not hot, not cold.. - it is def. blowing.. just not cold..
