A/C kicks on when heater is on

Is getting cold here and when I turn on the heat it is hot but my a/c compressor turns on and off every few minute or so. During the summer A/C had no problems. and stays engaged during a/c operation. any thoughts of what it could be?
2000 tahoe LS 5.3

I'm guessing it's to keep the hot air dry so your windows don't fog. I'll also guess that the AC turns on in defrost mode for exactly the same reason.

it might be but the heat doesn't get hot enough especial at idle. can i just unplug the compressor or could it be the relay?

Turn it on front only vent with the heat on high and the vent closed and see if the compressor kicks on, hopefully it is just doing it's job at defrosting when necessary.
