Hey guys. New from Kentucky. Needing serious advice. Got a99 Tahoe with a 5.7. While driving it sounds like engine is surging up and down. One day Iwas driving down the road and just dies. After a tow home and research I change fuel filter. It was 95% clogged. Thought it solved problem. Still surged. Now I am back to just shutting off. After several hours, It starts back up and does fine. Only thing I have done prior to this is cut off muffler. Thanks in advance.

If you have no cel then I would get a fuel pressure reading with key on engine off, engine running at idle and engine revved up and then shut off engine and watch to see if pressure holds or bleeds off. What can wear out a fuel pump is trying to constantly push fuel thru a clogged fuel filter. It burns up the pump over time. If you then replace the filter and free up the flow then the pump can accelerate the breakdown of it self by working a different way after the filter replacement.

First off, from now on when you post here and have engine running problems, if you have cel on then tell us in the beginning. No reason not to tell us everything up front.

If the sensors are reading a lean condition then yes that could point to a fuel delivery problem. It could also point to cat convertor efficiency problems and open up a whole other can of worms. If you get the code #'s then post back here with them.

Remember from here on out. Give us "everything" up front. Playing 20 questions is no fun.

Nothing rude about it at all. You just didn't know I guess. If you went to see a doctor when you feel bad you would share everything with him/her.

This is the same. Share it all so we can help quicker and more efficiently so you can fix the problem and depend on your vehicle. I am 62 so I don't do PC statements and requests. I don't mince words. I also don't get mad or curse on here. I just want to help and share.

So get some codes and report back. Usually Auto Zone will do for free. We just need the numbers and don't buy anything yet from them. May have a code P0420 about the cat(s) but maybe not. Sometimes is not the cat itself and is the oxygen sensors. We shall see.
