i had and have the same problem with both the 99 hoe and 99 burb. in the suburban i replace the sender and pump cause the guage stopped working completely unless it had over a half tank in it.. but i cant get the vibrating to go away.. its annoying cause it makes me feel like its still not working properly

I believe the correct "technical" explanation I read on this issue was that GM switched the servo they used to control the fuel gauge on the cluster mid-98, and it was simply a bad choice. I'll see if I can dig up the thread on FSC that talked about where/how/what to replace this.

Or you can do like I do... Tell your buddies the 'Hoe's happy to see you and simply waving at 'cha!

or try running a new ground to the fuel pump, the ground it has now is above the frame bolted on.. you can remove the bolt and clean it, but, its probably better to run a new one to it..

Has anyone figured the vibrating fuel gauge out yet? Any successful fixes?

I was going to start a thread asking this... but came across this post... haha.
I feel better that I'm not alone and we're all in it together.... haha

naw dude. we all suffer from this POS fuel thingy.

Jiminey was just here, and he was reading posts and making posts. I dont know how many he's done, but he sais " sending unit"

I agree that the problem might be mitigated with a ground fix, although I havent tried it.

I just owe it to myself to replace the pump. im just lazy. yesterday i pulled up to the garage real slow( on a hill), and the truck plap-plap-plap and killed. it idles sooo slowly it just pooped out on me. I mean, it starts right back up, but it seems to do this more when the tank is on almost "E"
meh. Ill rub down that ground or something.. see if that stops the wiggley needle...

I just ordered the Chilton's for my wife's Yukon, but would anyone be kind enough to point out where to look for the ground so I can try and fix this issue in advance? I have the vibrating fuel guage problem as well. Thanks!

yeah look around at the top of the tank for a ground strap that bolts to the frame.
It may be a braided-looking wire.
I still havent done it.... :)

There's a grounding strap coming off a hard fuel line and connecting to a part of the lower body right in front of the rear bumper. I figured maybe this was the one to check. I unbolted the grounding strap from the body, cleaned it up, bolted it back on, and now a new problem! The gas guage is not only vibrating still, but now it is bouncing around all over the place and doesn't seem accurate anymore. What the heck?

Any idea where go from here?

Also, where is the fuel pump in relation to the fuel inlet pipe? I'm hearing noise that seems to be coming from in front of the rear wheel kind of by the rear seat. I'm thinking that's the fuel pump, and if so, then is there another grounding strap there too?
