98 transmission 2nd gear..help

Ok so my 98 tahoe 4x4 after a trip to the keys starting giving 2nd gear issue..in that I mean that on a normal drive when the initial take off it won't grab 2nd gear if feels like it wants to but goes to 3rd gear instead.

At 1st I thought transmission was going bad but I noticed that of i drove 65+ miles mph for at least 3 min that it would fix itself I get into the city come to any stop and then on take off it will shift through all the gears as it normally should and not until I turn the truck off and restart it again that I would run into the same issue again..as if some memory somewhere erases something..I don't know.

I was told that I could be the catalytic converters.

Any one out there can shed some light on this for me?

How many miles on it? Have you swapped the filter and refilled the trans? Have you tried any trans tune ups in a can (i.e. TRANS X or the like?)

It has 140k miles ..and I have not done a tune up of any type yet..I will order the tune kit and do it right away or maybe the in a can type 1st hopefully that helps..I'll keep you posted..thanka forfor the response.

No problem, 140k is not a ton of miles especially if they are mostly highway. I have used the TransX stuff on some older transmissions with mixed results. Don't expect a miracle. If you have a shift solenoid hanging up due to some varnish, it may just be what the doctor ordered. BTW I had a 1997 Ventrue with a 4t60e that did the same thing with 3rd gear, would skip from 2nd to 4th, no 3rd at all..... And supposedly it was recently remanufactured......

Hi..so finally I had a chance to do the transmission tune up on Saturday it came with looks like to internal selinoids and the filter but unfortunately after top in it off took it for a spin and nothing changed it still skipped 2nd gear ..so now I guess I'll change the Y pipe cuz like I mentioned on my original thread that someone mentioned that the converters had something to do with the gears changing properly. I'll try to do it as soon as I have some spare time and post what I find out. If there's anything else I can do that might help please let me know..after the Y pipe I'm going to have no choice but to take it to a transmission shop like aamco.

Plugged up cats wont cause a 2nd gear only issue....
