hey people im new here. my dad has a 98 Tahoe 4x4 that we just got thru replacing the tranny with a assumingly good one from wrecking yard. yesterday was first startup on it. before starting poured a few courts into tranny, started to warm up, it sounds great no weird noises or anything. I pour a few more courts in as I continue to aloow to run. climb in, switch all the gears. fluid level still alittle low. so I go in house for 10 mins to allow it to get good n warm. come out and its now making a ticking noise. the noise does it regardless of what gear it is in, and it also decreases and increases with rpms. any help suggestions would be appreciated. mind you, its still up in the air awaiting the new rear driveline so it hasn't been driven.

Sounds like the flex plate is not tight or the inspection shield is not tight.
Thank you for the ssuggestions.
Im pretty positive now that it is/was the TC front pump. Because as dad was driving it it let go and now its like in fulltime neutral! Lol

And wrecking wont warranty it if it is a broken pump.....they say they only break upon install.

They may do an exchange for another one if you ask nice. They will likely not give money back because as you said the TC front pump is typically damaged by incorrect install of torque convertor. Likely didn't get it all the way seated before reinstalling trans. Shame on you.

Bummer, look up parts to fix pump, the 4l60e is not a complicated piece of equipment.... and IIRC the pump unbolts from the front....

Whats the chances the pump was bad already? I dont think wrecking yards test transmissions.

Reason being, it all went together nicely. TC wasnt binding against flexplate.

Like I said, ask for a swap for another one. It could have been bad to begin with, make sure to say that. Say, "I don't want my money back, just a swap." Likely will do it.

If im stuck with this trans due to me screwing up the install and breaking the pump. Can i just replace the pump? Or am i looking at needing to pull apart to check for debris?

You might check what you find in the pan and cut open the filter searching for some bits and pieces - the filter you sure minimum renewed when you took it from the yard back in April? if not time to do now, anyway. What happened between April and now - you found out that it won't transmit at all and then left it for more than half a year? I mean how can you expect that the guy from the junkyard even reminds you ....?
