I have a 96 4wd tahoe that when i crank either cold or hot it throttles up to about 1800 rpms then comes back down to idle in about 3-5 seconds. Could this be the TPS and if it is where is it located?

check iac valve for carbon buildup. the tps is on the drivers side of the throttle assembly.

also on the throttle assembly drivers side. the tps is the foward most one the iac is towards the rear. the iac is mounted by 2 torx screws. unplug it, remove both screw and clean tip as well as the chamber it mounts into. make sure gasket stays on iac and not in chamber if it does stay in chamber remount on iac. also while your at it get a can of maf(mass air flow) cleaner at your local parts store and clean that as well. that is the electonic part mounted in the air cleaner hose assembly. they get dirty over time. good luck.

thank you very much! I will give it a try. So you think it is probably more the iac than the tps?

yes, i periodically check/clean both the iac and maf sensors. they get carbon buildup on them. its worth doing and may solve your problem. good luck, post your findings.
