Hey guys so my dads 96 tahoe is making some clicking/grinding noises from the transfer case its got a jasper trans with 20k on it the truck has 257k miles on it. the other day he went to put it in 4wd and it didnt wanna go so of course he gave the shifter a smack and made it. since then hes had the noise only forwards and only in 2wd. in 4wd everything was quiet starts whenever you gert on the throttle around 2500rpm..
i figured it as a transfer case so i picked one up off craigslist. kid told me it was out of a 96 k1500 truck so i got it home and realized that the front yoke has a flange not a ujoint style yoke on it.so no big deal i got the other driveshaft everything measures the same so i put it all together and nothing. the truck just sits there when you put it in gear 2 or 4 wheel drive. so i called the kid and now he tells me it was a suburban case..i looked and both cases are 241c cases what did i miss is the input shaft on the new case bigger than the old one and not catching the transmission??or is it a bad case?? is there something simple on the old case i can look at?? im a full time auto tech havent rebuilt a tcase but wouldnt think it would be to bad..

so i was board and surfing thru some knowledgable forums and found were the snap ring on the rear shaft breaks went out to the grage and popped the back of the case apart and sure enough the c-clip was busted in 2 laying in the tailshaft..the shaft had about a 1/2 inch of play back and forth so id say i found my issue im gonna pick up a clip from the dealership this week and next weekend i will swap it back out
