hi guys
I just bought a 325 horsepower 350 rebuilt motor and put it into my 95 tahoe. I'm still working on some small tuning issues.(dynoed it and i'm missing about 100 horse power, the engine took about 28 seconds to get to 4300 rpm. which is crazy b/c it goes vroom now, we think it maybe be a timing issues but moving on). I am looking to get a programmer to over ride the stock ecm, the transmission shifts @ 4300 rpm when the engines red line is roughly 5500-5800 rpm. we're sure that's part of the problem to our horse power issue but it's not the entire story, we're still missing power, the AFR is with in reason, but i want to be able to change any and all parameters and set up a few tunes such as economy and power tunes. any recomandations on where to get a computer?

Man, is it TBI or fuel injected? if its fuel injected vortec motor - you should really look into doing an 0411 PCM, if not, than 95twinTT should be able to help

The 95 has OBD1 for ECM. I knew from advice of some people that had tried to program the stock computer, that it was difficult, so I went directly to a stand alone computer to handle my engine, several years ago.

Maybe there are some guys out there that have mastered reprogramming the OBD1 computers. If not there are several different brands of stand alone computers you can buy to get the most out of your new engine.

Your stock ECM has no way of knowing of the changes you have made.

You could also be in danger of doing some damage to your new engine if it goes too lean. You should have a wide band O2 tester checking the exhaust, to make sure you not too lean.

Check around with shops that do dyno tuning. They may have a brand of after market computer that they are familiar with. They may even be a dealer for that particular ECM and would do a package deal with the unit and tuning.

You could also check some different forums to see if anyone has or knows of, editing software for the OBD1 ECM's. There are a lot of OBD1's out there and it has been about six years since I had need to look for software. A lot can happen in that amount of time.

Let me know what you find. This subject comes of more often these days. Good luck.

what stand alone system did you use, i have a site called tuner cats but they don't have the ecu number for my truck and the guy wasn't familiar with the application. i wouldn't mind doing a stand alone...

I am using the Electromotive Tec3r. They are a bit expensive, but there they are showing up on Ebay frequently.

I like it because of the ability to download upgrades. It also has lots of expansion room for adding things. I currently use a Innovate wide band system as the air fuel control of the engine. It also has extra controls I have not used yet, but will soon, like the ability to control waste gate valves, etc.

Then there is FAST and MegaSquirt. The Mega squirt, I understand can be bought as a kit and you do it all yourself. I have not seen one in person, only what I read about.

You can go to the Electromotive web site and download the manual for the Tec3. That would give you an idea if you want to get involved to that level.

If not, try the path of talking to some tuning shop folks to see what they favor.

the only real tuner shop/dyno in the area has never done anything older than a '99 thus my predicament. but i think it may be easier to do a stand alone at this point...... thank you for the heads... i'll keep everything posted

Most stand alone computers do NOT deal with automatic tranmissions. You will still have to get some programming done on the existing ECM or go to an additional control for the trans.

I used the stock ECM in and OBD1 car to control the auto trans, while using a Tec3 control on the engine. They just have to share some info from a few sensors. :)
