Can anyone tell me the difference between the 4L60, 4L68e and the 4L80e tranmissions? I have the 4L68e and am trying to determine if I need to upgrade for power increases.

Thanks,

Rob

I'm not familiar with a 4L68e but if your comparing the 60e to the 80e, the main difference is through-put capability. A "built" 4L60e is only good for about 500 to 550 hp. There 3/4 clutch pack leaves a lot to be desired. The 4L80e is good for 500hp out of the box and can be built for 1,000 hp

The other big difference is in the gear ratio's. The 4L60e has a much deeper 1st gear. The 80e is more like a manual close ratio 4 speed.

Ratio's are 4L60e 1ST / 3.059 2ND / 1.625 3RD / 1.0 4TH .696 TO 1

................ 4l80e 1ST / 2.482 2ND / 1.482 3RD / 1.0 4TH .75 TO 1

I have the 4L80e in my Tahoe and I love it. I also have the TCI TCU control unit to take advantage of all the tricks it can do. I have the paddle shifter set up and also a trans brake. The taller first gear is no problem because I also have 4:56 gears. :)

I also have a "built" 4L60e in a Camaro that is handling 600 plus hp without a problem, yet. But, the Z can spin the wheels easier to get rid of excess power, where the Tahoe has a lot more weight holding that rubber to the ground.

I have a '99 2dr 2wd Tahoe with a 4L60e and a 2002 GMC 1/2 ton P/U truck with a 4L80e. I like the 4L80e much better. It's a lot tighter, it downshifts faster and better, just all around better performance.

I have a question about my Tahoe: I just bagged it, removed the trailer hitch and bumper and put a roll pan on it. The problem is that the huge gas tank hangs down about 6" below the body. Has anyone come up with a solution to reduce the size of the tank so that it doesn't hang down so far?

I actually have a 4l80e in my garage and I was considering doing a swap. Does anyone know if it is a direct swap, or does it take much fabrication or a new drive shaft?

Thanks,

Rob

The cross member slides back to the next set of holes in the frame. You use the same mount and the drive shaft needs to be shortened with the proper yoke and u-joint swapped at the same time.

If four wheel drive, you need to make a new front drive shaft and change out the through put shaft, in the transfer case, to the larger size to match the 80e.

The pinion angle will probably have to be adjusted.

If it’s manual shift on the 4 wheel drive, the linkage needs to be lengthened. There is a minor wiring change and the ECM needs some attention. If you are using a stand alone compute for the trans, no change needed for the ECM.

You will also need the 80 dip stick and tube.
