My 2007 Chevy Tahoes 4WD stopped working and the "Service 4WD" LIGHT started flashing on the dash. I took it to the dealership and they diagnosed it and came up with a bad encoder motor. Instead of paying an arm and a leg for parts and labor at the dealer****, I ordered it and installed it myself. I looked up the process online and folowwed it step by step, now my transfer won't shift out of neutral? Has anyone had this problem and if so, what worked for you. I'm now leaning towards the switch on the dash.

What kind of encoder motor did you get?

There has been some reports of cheap Chinese encoder motors not working out of the box, and been replace with OEM to correct the problem.

I got a Dorman I ordered from Parts Geek. I will try to unplug the switch on the dash tomorrow, but it's in neutral now.

No update, trying to track down a selector switch because the transfer is still in neutral and won't do anything. I had to manually shift the transfer to neutral when I replaced the encoder, now, like I said, it just stays in neutral. The switch read "N", but there is still an issue with signal being sent to the encoder/transfer.

Thanks. I have the U0102 code now with svc 4wd on dash.
I have seen things from a bad Transfer Case Control Module, an Encoder Motor, 4wd position sensor, transfer case shift control either the switch or module.

I have no idea where to begin and which one it is. Most of the parts are not cheap either to just throw them in and see if it works.

I noticed that the yellow light on the 4wd switch sometimes is on and other times it is out.

I am so lost with this truck now. I've replaced the encoder motor and the switch I the dash with no change. Before replacing the encoder, it would just stay in 2WD, after changing the encoder, it stays in neutral because you have to shift it to neutral to replace the motor. Does anyone have any advice or have experienced this type of issue. I'm willing to try anything at this point, just don't have the money to keep plugging new stuff up every time something doesn't work.

Issue has been fixed. Finally broke down and took it to a shop. They got the same codes I had before all pretty much pointing to the encoder motor but decided to take the transfer down and upon doing so, found a wire damaged above the transfer. Still ended up costing nearly $500 because it needed a new battery after sitting so much in the cold the past month or two and with all the diagnostics and labor.
