When I first start my truck it makes a strange noise while turning my steering wheel. It sounds like a clunk, clunk, clunk per steering shaft rotation. I think I feel a little play in the steering wheel as well. Front end is tight. The odd time it actually sounds like a clicking noise (briefly). I should mention this is all while standing still or making my first move out of the driveway.
Thanks,

Sounds like could be a few issues.

The first is the dreaded GM Intermediate Steering Shaft debacle. Get a Dorman replacement for about $50.

While you have the shaft out, check the U-joint on the lower shaft for play and replace as needed.

The next is the lower column bearing. Check for excessive side-to-side play at bottom of the column.

DO NOT SPIN THE STEERING WHEEL AROUND LOOKING FOR NOISE WHILE THE SHAFT IS REMOVED. YOU WILL MESS UP THE STEERING SENSOR. TIE THE WHEEL SO IT DOESN'T MOVE WHILE SERVICING THE SHAFTS.

If you MUST spin the wheel to check the bearing with a shaft removed, start with the wheels straight and turn no more than 3/4 turn to the right or left - always re-centering the wheel so you don't botch the sensor.

Should take about an hour or so to do all 3 but read up on how to do them as the problem is common and the procedure has been covered all over the net.

The problem turned out to be the intermediate steering shaft. $72 part and $180 labour. Noise is all gone.

Intermediate steering shaft clunk

This should be considered a design flaw that GM fails to acknowledge.
I had to have mine replaced twice on a new 2001 Tahoe. Twice on my wife's 2000 Tahoe. And once on a 2000 Silverado pickup I had.
If its out of warranty its about a $200 fix from the dealership.
