I know this is the 94-99 section, but the 00 Z71 is the same body style as the 94-99, so I figured I should post here. Anyway, I am looking at buying a Tahoe/Yukon, and the 00 Z71 really stood out for me. I have a few questions about it though. First, the buttons to select 4wd have four choices, the normal 3 (2 HI, 4 Hi, and 4 lo) then there is an auto 4wd button. What does the auto 4wd button do, and why is it not on other Tahoes?

Also, for anybody that owns one of these, what are things I should look at before buying one?

The Auto setting engages the front wheels when slipping is detected. I think it is called AutoTrac and came out around 1998. It may have been optional on some, I couldn't say for sure.

Take a prospective truck to a dealer and pay $100 for an hour's worth of labor for an inspection. It's well worth it so you can minimize any surprises.

The usual suspects....

1. One of the intake manifold gaskets usually leaks (can't remember which one) but its about $600 to fix at the dealer.

2. Windshield wiper circuit board (new one is about $35) should be repaired or replaced when the wipers don't work per the dial setting. It takes about five or ten minutes to replace the board, no big deal there.

3. EVO sensor in the steering may be faulty and give the feeling of slipping when you're driving around a sweeping curve...kind of like hitting a patch of ice.

4. Fuel pumps...the dealer charged nearly $800 on our 03 Tahoe.

5. Oil cooler lines...the crimped ends on the hoses are pretty sorry. Some say they've replaced them for about $60 in parts and an hour or two on a weekend...some report the dealers wanting $300 to replace them. They're leaking on my 98 Z71 but I haven't gotten that far yet.

6. There's a hose fitting that fits into the valve cover on the passenger side...I think it's for the heater or something. Anyways, the factory part tending to break off during removal and could be a pain ($) to remove. An updated version is available. Most Chevy mechanics could probably tell you more about that.

7. The door jamb switches sometimes turn to crap so if your dome light stays on all the time that's probably it. They're about $7 each so again no big deal.

I guess that's it, others could probably add. Those are nice trucks by the way....good choice.

alright.. a few more questions. this is pretty much the same as my last question but how big is the tank, and how many miles can you get on a full one?

also, what are all the speaker sizes in this truck, and where are they all located?

My gas tank is 25 gallons. I believe that there were a few sizes available though, so yours may hold more or less than that.

my 99 sburban had a 45 gallon tank, but i had a 2500 with a 7.4 i think the 2000 GMT 400 tahoe had a 31 gallon tank.

speakers on my 99 were located in the following places.

speaker in driver and pasanger door with tweeters above.

speakers in second row doors.

speakers in the ceiling in the cargo area behind the third row.

so a 6 speaker system that had ATON of base. but sound was distorted whey you got loud on my new bose one i can have it at MAX with no distortion.

thank you all for all the information, all of this helps alot when buying a new car as I'm sure you all know...

I wanted to know the speaker sizes just so I could shop for new ones, as soon as I get a new car thats always the first thing to be replaced. I have never had a newer GM product before, just a '79 Electra, and I've never really dealt with anything like this Tahoes cd player setup, does anybody have pictures of aftermarket decks installed?

I have a 2000 Z71 Tahoe as well. the Auto 4WD. when the wheels do not detect slipping it goes around in 2WD. but when there is a speed diff in oh say the front and rear wheels it kicks into 4WD to give you the added traction. it is mainly a gas mileage thing so that the truck only gives you 4WD when you need it.

during winter that is pretty much all i use so i dont have to worry about switching between 4WD and 2WD.

also depnding on the mileage look for a coolent leak from the front of the engine. mine had 136,000 when i bought it just under a year ago and i had a bad intake manifold gasket. THANKFULY it didnt take out the engine. all the coolent leaked to the outside.

mine has 155,000 now less than a year later and it is running strong. no burning oil. smooth idle. lots of power. FUN IN THE MUD!!!!!
