My 1998 Chevrolet Tahoe dies out while driving. It has happened only on long trips and the service engine light does not come on. It starts right back up and runs fine, but the engine has died more than once, just not back to back. One time after the engine killed, I drove to gas station and it died while idling. I have been told that the electronic control module (ecm) could be overheating on long trips or it could be a fuel pump/pressure problem. I went to a service station and the guy said if it didn't relay any signal to the computer via the engine light coming on, he could not diagnose it. Any help is greatly appreciated.

I hope someone has a diagnosis to this issue because I am having the same problem but not as worse YET. It is idling rough enough that I thought it was going to crap out on me while sitting at a traffic light. It randomly feels like it tries to die every once in awhile while driving.

My check engine light isnt on either but i'm going to run a code reader on it when I get off work. They say it won't throw a code if the light isn't on but that's bull spit. My explorer I got rid of didn't have a check engine light on when it was running rough and I ran a scan on it and it threw a code. The guy @ the part store couldn't believe it.

I've read up on a variety of problems. It can be a drop in fuel pressure, the fuel pump itself may be overheating, some say it may be the electronic control module. I thought if the module is malfunctioning, the service engine light would come on. Anyway, I'm bringing it in to the shop on Tuesday. I'll keep you guys posted what they come up with. In the meantime, if anyone has any other suggestions, I would appreciate it.
