hello all,

I have been looking for a new transmission for my 1997 Tahoe. Although I am not getting any answers..

Why is that when asked.. everyone says the only transmission I can use is from a 1997?

I called the dealer today trying to get some info and got no real help at all.
The guy just kept saying the gear ratios are different. He could'nt explain to me why the 2005 tranny I found would'nt work.

I'm not looking to haul a bulldozer or anything of that sort.. I just want to get in and do basic day to day driving.

Someone please chime in and point me inthe right direction.

GM was moving from manual controlled transmissions to electronic between 94, 95 and 96. It varied from cars to trucks, model to model as to exactly what they had and when.

After the first year of the 4L60e, there were a few rapid changes. I don't remember the specific's, but things like TC lock-up.

The other thing that happened was OBD1 to OBD2 ECM's. The 95 Tahoe has the OBD1 and the 96 and up should be the OBD2.

The best bet would be to talk to a tranny repair technician. They would know chapter and verse about what you might have to change on a 95 tranny to use it in a 97.

What about the 2005 tranny?

It there that much change in the tranny from 1997 to 2005?

I have a line on a 4l60e out of a 2005 Chevy truck that was wrecked @20,000 miles.

LiLYell, I'm watching for answers, too. I'm in your same boat, bro.

I just read a thread about moving from the 4L60e to a much tougher 4L80e, but there are a few wiring and driveshaft mods involved that seem to put it WAY over my DIY confidence level.

I believe you can use a transmission from 96-99 behind the vortec engines not just from a 97. Also if you want to use that 2005 4L60E transmission from the newer LS trucks you will need to use the spacer/adapter kit below:

-The GMPP transmission adapter kit (PN 19154766) is a tidy collection that lets you adapt any Gen-III or Gen-IV 4L60E or 4L80E transmission to Gen-I or Gen-II engines. It comes complete with spacer ring (transmission-to-cylinder block adapter), shims, dowels, bolts and flexplate. Be aware that it works only with 1-piece rear main seal engines.

Couple of good reads about how to do the 4L80E swap:
