Will it fit, in a word yes.

Will it work, I doubt it, there were some electrical revisions throughout the years, start by looking if the plugs are the same.

I have a 2 door 1997 (2WD) and I have a 5.7 Vortec with a 4L60e in it. Reason I know, I just had the motor and tranny rebuilt a month ago. As far as I know it came from the factory like that.

4l60e has several variants, just because it holds that designation does not mean they will interchange. I know that after messing with the 4t60e for my Venture that only a 97 is preferred for a 97, altho a 97/98 might work, in 99 they changed wiring and pressure modulation from vacume to electronic, different torque converters, etc....

I would ASSUME that the 4l60e has its variants as well where small changes that were made as technology evolved were introduced. For instance the 350 engine in my 95 'hoe is not the same as the 350 in your 97 'hoe, many differneces (fuel injection to begin with, heads, intake, etc.....) Still a 350 tho..... they didnt call it a 350 and a 350a........ Clear as mud? :)

Since this got dredged up again, I looked into P#'s for transmissions, 97 4x4 does not match 99 4x4, so I would say the answer is NO to the Original Interchange question.
