Hey everyone, i am new here its nice to have a place like this were you can talk about your truck problems. Anyways I have a 95 tahoe 4 wheel drive that i have to change the 4l60-e transmission out of. From what i have read in my Haynes manual it doesnt look too hard except maybe getting the transfer case off. Also if anyone has done this before does the transmission hang low enough once you get the crossmember off to get the top bolts that bolt it onto the engine. Those are the only two things i am worried about i was just seeing if anyone had any tips or other things to look out for. Also i have taken the exhaust off already and there are several of the studs broke off in the manifold any easy way to get those out i assume not but just checking. Thanks for any help you may have.

What I did most of the time with my 4L60 removal’s, was to leave the transfer case bolted to the cross member. I take the two bolts out on each side, frame rail and slide the entire transfer case and cross member, back a few inches. It moves enough to easily get the trans out and in.

There could be some corrosion issues with the two bolts on each side, holding the frame rails. Mine were clean enough that the impact zipped them out easily.
If they are rusted up, it can be a hassle, because the nut has to travel over about an inch of threads.

I also had a old yoke to plug the leak when the drive shaft came out. On other occasions, I have borrowed the plastic plug made for that purpose from a tranny shop.

The engine does come down far enough to get at the top bell housing bolts. I use several extensions with one of those “wobble†joints on the end extension.

Around the bell housing, there could be a couple of those “stud†bolts that have wire clips bolted to them. I can’t remember.

When you are coming down with the trans, keep it tipped to the rear a little, to be sure the torque converter does not slip out. Once you are loose from the bell housing, there is nothing holding it in.

All and all is it pretty straight forward. Good luck………
