Took my Tahoe in to the dealer for an oil change and was told I need to replace 2 brake pads (1 front and 1 rear) and turn the rotors for $600.

Is it necessary to turn the rotors? There's no squeaking. Tahoe has 51K miles.

If I want to do this myself, any advice on what pads to buy?

Thanks

i posted the same question on the tahoeyukonforum.com and i am going to ATTEMPT to replace front rotors and pads with updated ceramic pads/rotors (a big upgrade from stock). price so far is around 250.00 from pep boys, ordering online is about same price for the same quality but some guys have put $4k into their brakes:eek:. install time is arouund 1hr-15.hr for both sides. $600.00 is a major ripoff. and by the way, i did pay 5.00 for the disc brake tool to puch the brake part in, just youtube front brake job and watch how easy it looks

Here are a few pics of when I changed my pads and rotors. It took me two full days but I saved a lot of money. Let me know if you have any questions.

thanks but how about a little more detail on what you had to do. was wondering if you need to do anything with the brake fluid when you push the cylinder back in to get the new pads on. how hard was it to take off the calipers and did you have to service them, if so, what do you do to accomplish that.
thanks

In regards to the break fluid, I did not do anything. If you think about it, everytime you step on the break, the two little cylinders inside the caliper move in and out. Do you bleed your breaks everytime you step on the breaks? No. I took a "C" clamp and used the old break pad to push the two cylinders in just enough to get the new pads on. It worked perfectly. A few of the bolts around the caliper where a "B@*#H" to get off. I had to make a breaker bar to put on the wrench. I did not service the calipers. Just remember to use something to hold the calipers once you take them off. You will see that I used a bungee cord in one of the pics. I used Hawk break pads. I will say that the Hawk break pads cause more dust then the ones Chevy uses. (Sorry Hawk!) They have great stopping power but unless you like to clean your wheels everyday, use something else. Let me know if you have any other questions. Good luck!
