Hey everybody, I just became the owner of a 97 Tahoe LT 4X4. The Tahoe was my dad's that he bought new and he decided that he has too many cars and gave the Tahoe to me and I'm lovin it. It has about 125k miles and runs great. I also own a 94 Caprice 9C1. Theres a pic of the Caprice but I wont be able to post a pic of the Tahoe because it is about 300 miles away and I wont be able to drive it again until May :mad2:. I took the Hoe on an 800 mile road trip about two weeks ago for my spring break and I was a little disappointed with the gas mileage. I averaged about 15 MPG the whole trip and 90% was on the freeway. I kept her between 77-80 mph which was about 2350 RPM and I was wondering is this typical for a hoe or does something need to be done?
Pic of my Caprice, which is for sale BTW.

Welcome to the forum, Tahoe's are great trucks, but don't expect Civic mileage as you are driving a 5000 LB truck.

Well of course I don't expect the mileage of a Civic but 15 mpg is kinda ****ty compared to my Caprice which gets 19 MPG highway and it weighs about 4300 lbs and has an LT1. What are some good mods to improve mpg on my Tahoe?

15mpg is in the ballpark. Even though your pushing a B-body with an LT1 and getting 19mpg, aerodynamics are way different from that and the 'hoe. So 15 is decent. To improve it, you can start off by opening the intake and exhaust systems. A chip and better ignition system will help as well. Look into changing the plugs, plug wires, air and fuel filter. If these haven't been done, then that should help just a bit also.
And welcome to the forum:cool:

JK motorsports, the hoe has a K&N air filter that my dad installed a few years back, which he says improved the mpg. What would be good intake and exhaust upgrades? Ive heard that the 5.7 Vortec intake design is poor and builds up gunky **** all the time. Also, does anybody know some good sites for Tahoe upgrades/customization?

15ish is normal mileage for our rides.

A good place to start for custom parts dress etc is to your left and right on the sponsor links. Ans then of course Summit Racing.

welcome to the forum, dude.
You look like you have a great view from your yard or wherever that picture was taken.

Yeah that was an empty lot that is right next to my parents house in Boise. It has a great view of the valley. It was a good spot for pics but now there is a house on it. I appreciate the input guys!

Welcome to the forum. Can't wait to see pics of your Tahoe.

I see you are from Moscow, at least part time. I live in Colfax, but work in Pullman, about 8 miles away for those of you who aren't familiar with The Palouse.

I drove to Seattle and back last summer in my 97 2 door. I averaged a little better than 17 mpg over the whole trip. The 15 mpg you are getting seems a touch low, but maybe the tune-up will help.

Hey cool mike, nice to see someone from the Palouse. Ive driven thru Colfax quite a few times to go to Spokane. I live in Moscow during the schoolyear, I like it better up here than in Boise where I'm from. But the damn weather is ridiculous, snowed a half inch this morning now its 60 degrees and sunny. But yeah I can't wait to mod my ho, gotta wait till summer though so ****.

Yeah, that was some crazy weather today. Supposed to get more of the same for the next few days.

What kind of mods are you planning to do?

I want to do an exhaust system, lift it a bit but I'm not sure how much, put some bigger wheels and tires on and put a brush guard on it. Probably tint the windows as well. Ive been on Summit's website and eBay looking at parts and trying to research what to do online but i'm a noob when it comes to this stuff so i'm not sure how to go about it.

Mine's pretty much stock except for the exhaust. Sounds like you have some good plans, but you might want to go with an aftermarket intake too if you are going to upgrade your exhaust. I plan to get one this summer. And keep in mind that the bigger the tires you decide on, the more it will affect your fuel mileage (negatively). A lot of guys on this site have upgraded their trucks. Look around and if you see something you like you can pm them and see where they bought it.
