Sorry guys, a little surprised with all the infinite amount of wisdom that is offered so often on this board no one knows the answer or cares to answer.

I know that on my '06 Z71 the alternator puts out 160 amps.

I've seen high-capacity amps that put out 200 amps. I'm simply curious what the implications are of putting on a high-capacity alternator. Is the alternator only going to put out as much power as called for but has the capacity for more? Is it going to blow components or is putting on a higher quality and capacity simply a waste of my time?

I know we have the knowledge base here, but I haven't gotten any replies yet.

Thanks.

Adding a higher output alternator won't "blow" components. Electrical loads will only draw the amount of current needed to operate. The alternator is there to supply current when needed, not "force" it through electrical circuits.
The stock alternator is almost always more than enough for the stock electrical system. Once you start adding numerous or high current accessories, then you'll have to look into upgrading your alternator.

Thanks for your help and for educating me on this.

I found a spec sheet showing the Z71 alternator is already a 160 amp unit so it's kicking out a lot of juice. I was looking at some billet components, some high-end replacements and didn't want to jump on anything prior to checking this out.

Thank you!

you probably dont want a high output alternator as it will use more power (horsepower that is) to run the alternator; which in turn will also use up more gas. You will be sucking the life out of your motor and unless you are runnin a sweet audio setup or have a huge CFM electric fan AND pulling a big trailer while running your AC and Rear entertainment system... lol, well... you get the point.... your stock alternator is fine
