Just bought a 2004 Tahoe LT with Autoride, Bose Stereo, and OnStar. On the drivers side of the overhead console is a black hands free speaker. Is this stock for use wiith the OnStar system or is this an aftermarket item that the previous owner added? My cell phone is bluetooth enabled so how would I set up a hands free connection? Thanks for the help.

its stock, im not sure what it does, but theres another one on the drivers side back between the second and third row on mine. i would like to know too. i always wonder if thats a microphone that onstar monitors us with, or if it releases a toxic gas in the car if it senses a theft, or if its just some tweeters for the bose.

That is actually the sensor for the climate control. The speaker I am talking about is mounted on the side of the overhead console. I will try to get some pictures posted today.

Yup, that is the one. Is there some way to use my cell phone handsfree with this mike?

Anyone know how to disable the Onstar? Tried pulling the fuse, but that also disconnects more than just the Onstar. We haven't paid for it for about 3 years, but when the wife accidently hit the button, it called right up.

There's mods to get the stock OnStar to pair with BT.

In fact, it was a rather easy (although pricey) "mod" on my wife's Mercedes, which also was locked to Verizon, and a crappy phone at that.

I, on the other hand, will be installing a head unit that has BT integrated.

You can pop your radio out and unplug the onstar harness in the back of the unit.. that should do it. Doesn't disconect the onstar system you just wont hear them anymore.

If you have a Verizon phone, you just add a line to your existing account for $10 /month and share the minutes from your original plan. You use the onstar button just like the onstar phone, but it works through your cell. The small mic on the overhead console is the mic for that. The small speaker looking thing over your head in teh drivers seat is the ambient temperature sensor for your automatic climate control. It is what pulls in small amounts of air and checks for the interior temp of teh car for the automatic climate control to work. It will inevitably go bad and start to make a humming sound. Just had this problem with mine!
