I bought a transmission for my 96 tahoe in may I found it in a junkyard for about $700 pretty expensive for me at the time and it has been working fine until the other day when I drove to the westbank and started coming back and my car would go from 2nd gear to 3rd but 3rd stopped working for me all it did was make my rpms go up so I had to put it in 2nd and drive on the interstate in 2nd for a half hour. What do you think I should do go to the junkyard again and buy a new one or get it fixed or is there any other thing I can do? btw I'm still 17 and work at a church so I don't make alot of money.

My honest answer to you is to rebuild it yourself. You will find it very gratifying and these are not complex trannys at all.

Really?
I've seen the rebuild kits but I never thought about getting it.
I dont really know much about transmissions other than how to take them out of the car.

I have had it for about 6 months...
Someone told me that it might be a shift solenoid or something like that, that I may need. Does anyone know how to put one in?

could just be the shift solenoid on the valve body. GM put out a bunch of them that were basically junk. they worked great, right up until your warranty ran out. chek ebay for them. i would start there before throwing in another tranny.

What about the other gears ??

If you have 1st you should have 3rd, If you have 2nd you should have 4th. If there is something mechanical wrong inside the trans. If you have 2nd and 3rd then thats a limp mode meaning something electrical is wrong.

Do you have reverse and does it hit a little harder when it engages than it used to?

limp mode is 3rd only, its a 96 he should have a code? or a engine light? try manually shifting it first second third drive and see if u can get it to catch 4th if it catches drive manually its something electronic if not then it could be ur 4th clutches are bad, i would try and call a privately owned tranny shop not a huge chain like amco i called around and found a complete rebuild with shift kit for 700 i just had to take it out and put it in, good luck and give us more details.....

also sound to me that ur cluches are slipping try the manually shifting and if that doesnt work then my guess would be time for a rebuild!
