Help,

When I started up my 2001 Tahoe 4x4 this morning, water came shooting out of the bottom right side of the engine bay all over my driveway. It was quite a bit of water, about 2-3 cups of water. After I got in and headed to work, it ran just fine.

What could this be? Is this something that I need to get fixed, or is it something that shouldn't hurt the Tahoe.

My Background : I know little about the inner workings of cars. I change my own oil, and can do general maintenence, but when it comes to things like this I dont really know what Im doing. I am short on cash, and if this needs to be repaired, is it something that I will be able to do myself, or should I take it to a mechanic?

I appreciate any help you can give me, she's getting alittle older now, and I will more than likely be on here asking for help more often.

You might have a water pump leaking. Could also be that it rained where you live and water washed down into the engine bay. Have to cooling system pressureized and check for leaks.

Was it water or coolant? 2-3 cups isn't much if it was from rainfall, cooling system, or maybe WW fluid reservoir. But it sounds like external run-off of some sort, I know that if you had a hole in your cooling system flowing that much it would have kept flowing until dry, and you wouldn't have made it to work. I don't believe the thermostat bypasses in a way that closes anything off when warm.

Chances are the drain for the AC condenser got plugged up with leaves, pine needles, ect - whatever you have in your area that settles on your hood - and once enough water built up in it, it broke the clog loose and it all drained out.

If you're sure it's just water, don't worry about it. My truck has done the exact same thing twice now.
