I picked up a 97 yukon for a great price recently, it's loaded, everything works, the engine is in great shape, but the transmission is starting to go. Right now it will slip when it is in OD after the truck has been run down the interstate a ways. I know that the transmissions in these from these years tended to make better boat anchors than transmissions. I knew the transmission was having issues when I got it, but the price reflected it.

Anyway, I talked to a tranny shop about a rebuild on it. Now you must understand that I live in the rural west so I don't have many options when it comes to who I take it to. Basically, they said if I drop it and bring it in, they'll build it for 1100. If they drop it and put it back in i'm looking at 1700. I also asked them about what parts they would use, and basically they would rebuild it with OEM replacement parts. I explained that if I was having it rebuilt I wanted it built to handle off road duties (it will be my new hunting rig) and some towing (4-wheelers, snow machines, no campers - that's how the Duramax earns its keep), and I would add maybe 30 - 40 hp to the engine. They seemed to think that I needed no special rebuild to handle what I want to do.

My questions are:

Does the price sound way out of line? Remember we usually have to pay a premium because a major city is 3 1/2 hours away, but worth it if it saves enough.

and

do I need a little beefier rebuild to do what I want? OR might it be a better idea to get a tranny from one of the online outfits I have checked out and go that route?

That price is pretty good if it's for an entire rebuild with a torque converter. On Long Island, I've paid 2300 for that.

Have them upgrade it to 4L65E specs with factory parts. It'll cost more, but it'll last better.
