Well, after much searching about this intermittent "grinding" noise I get when starting, I have a few leads to work on.

I'm going to check to make sure the bolts are tightened all the way.

I'll check the + and - connections to make sure they're good and not covered in gunk.

The last thing I want to check before replacing it it the ground wire. Does anyone know where the starter ground wire ends up?

Thanks in advance.

The grind you hear could also be a dead spot on your flywheel. That is where part of the starter ring gear has sheared off. The only way you are going to inspect that is to remove the starter and turn the engine over by hand a full rotation, checking the starter ring gear teeth on the flywheel.

Probably a tired starter silenoid, when the silenoid doesn't have the power needed to fully engage the starter gear to the flywheel teeth. When it is grinding when you try starting it, try tapping on the starter lightly with a hammer or something heavy but with some give, by doing this you can sometimes free up a dirty or sticky silenoid and get it to work.

I'm thinking about taking it out this weekend, and cleaning it up a bit.

I'll try that before replacing it for sure.

UPDATE on this problem. My starter crapped it's shell yesterday. It had been acting naughty for a while, and was kind enough to give me Thanksgiving to New Years without a single grind... then starting Sunday it did it every time I stared it up.

I took it in and had it checked out, and it was toast.

At least it was not the fly wheel!

Like you said, at least it is just the starter and not the flywheel!!! I have had so many people freak me out by saying that it was probably the teeth on the flywheel but every time for me (I would think at least 8 starters in my life) it has only been a tired starter (not to say it never happens to a flywheel, just hasn't happened yet to me). Glad you didn't get stranded during the holidays, be sure to thank the starter before you throw it away for holding out for so long!!
