So I have traced every ground, cleaned connections, and checked for broken wires. No dice in getting this fuel guage to read properly. It goes to full when you start it and then after a few minutes goes to empty. Every now and again it will jump to full and then sit back on empty. I hear a whining noise over my speakers as i accelerate and to make sure it was not due to bad grounding I checked it all out. I wonder if it is from the fuel pump or the alternator (the RFI noise)... What do you guys suggest I should do first to trouble shoot this issue? I would rather not replace the pump if it is ok. The pump is running very quiet and I have no issues running this Tahoe. Just don't know how much fuel I have left... Is the sending unit a separate part? Or should I check the gauge first and if so how do you do that? It is a 98 Z71 Tahoe LT with 174,000 miles and the 5.7. She has lived a southern life (no rust) and have no upgrades (yet) except regular maintenance and a set of mud terrains. Does not even have one fluid leak under her! I know for sure when i bought it the owner left it quite dirty to my liking.. Thanks for any help everyone!

Anyone? .... Did I post this in the wrong spot or something.... I have read all the fuel gauge posts and it does not seem like anyone else has the issue with the noise over the factory stereo system. Really wonder how I can isolate the two to be able to troubleshoot.

Update

No longer have the noise over the stereo after replacing with an aftermarket deck. Still have a fuel gauge issue that drives me crazy but not enough to drop the tank and replace the sending unit. Anyways I am just tracking miles at fill-up and calling it good for now....:happy160:

1. could be the stepper motor in the gauge cluster for the fuel 2. could be the sender 3. could be the harness that connects to the pump.
