rear thud noise help

hey guys how are you , just purchased a 97 tahoe 1500 4dr, and since i bought it it has been making this thud clunk noise when i accelerate from a stop or come to complete stop, its really annoying, i thought it might have been rear shocks but i changed them and still the same thing. im kinda baffeled on what it could be everything looks good and i dont know what esle it might be can anyone help me out or anyone having the same problem or find out what the soultion

I would suggest pulling the driveshaft and putting a good quality grease in the splined end where it fits over the tailshaft. These things are famous for the thump you are discribing.

wow really huh , is there any other preventative stuff u can think of as well as that ? i will get to that asap ?

yea hes right my 99 did the same thing when i bought it. i took of the driveline put some grease in the spline and the thunk went away:thumbsup:

see thats intersting , is there any kind of bushing or seal in there that gets replaced along with that ? i know i might sounds crazy but how long will the stuffed grease last in there for ? , i mean if u do it once and ot wont come back great, outstanding, but is that somehting u need to do periodically

I had a friend do a partial rebuild on my transfer case and we put grease on the yoke when we put everything back together. He said unless you want to spend the $200 something for the new nickel plated yoke recommended in the gm TSB you should plan to do it every oil change. And BTW, the grease only lasted 2 or 3 weeks for me before the thunk was back.

yea see thats crazy and kinda dosent make sense , why would a nicle plated yoke make a difference, it seems that there is a part missing, if u change the yoke u bet there is a bushing that goes along with teh tsb kit , and only 2-3 weeks on teh greese man i tell u , sucks bigtime , to cold here in nyc to kack truck up and try it well c maybe tommorw or somehting definetly isnt getting any warmer any quicker

I had a 1999 Tahoe with 410,000 kilometres that never made a sound. The 1999 Yukon I now have had 100,000 Kilometres and the clunk when I got it. I greased mine and 20,000kilometres later it is fine. I used a high temperature lithimum grease.
You asked about other maintenance items. Get comforatable with adjusting the rear brakes. Everyone complains about the brakes on these things and they are right, however, if you service and adjust the rear brakes a couple of times per year they are fine.
Fuel pumps are another issue. If you change fuel filters on schedule, you can extent the life of your pump, however, if you keep your hoe you will do a pump (or two). It is an easy job if you know how and can be done in the backyard in a couple of hours.
There are issues with the ignition, heater A/C switches on some vehicles, others vehciles are problem free. There are issues with hard steering at slow speeds on some vehicles, others never experience any problems.
Remember, your hoe is 12 years old and like any vehicle age does not improve them. They need maintenance and I've found it is better to do preventive maintenance than it is to be towed home. According to my wife I'm kind of anal, if I hear smell or see something, I fix it before it leaves me on the side of the road.

my hoe had the same problem for 3-4 years then my second and reverse went out in the trany had it rebuilt and i told the guy about the problem and he showed me a servo part that was made of plastic that had cracks around the center of it where fluid was getting through and said that would cause it and that he replaced it with a metal one and i shouldnt have the problem anymore. i have been driving her for going on 2 months and it hasnt done it at all since the rebuild.

I lubed mine with some nasty looking brown grease my uncle (former GM tech before his money making dealership got shut down for some reason) gave me and it has eliminated my noise, it has been a couple months now, it was almost waxy going on too...... I figured if the noise came back I would drill in a grease zerk and be done with it.
