re-routing drive belt

My A/C does't work on my 96 Yukon and my compressor is starting to make gringing noises like it wants to seize up. Does anyone know what I would need to re-route the drive belt around the a/C clutch? There is a pic on the front of the truck that shows the two ways to route the belt but I'm not sure what pullies and brackets I may need. I figure if the compressor seizes up on me i'm going to end up stranded some where. 1996 Yukon with 5.7 four door 4x4. Thanks

to bypass the a/c a different/shorter belt is needed.

Yep, you need to go to the auto parts store and pick up a belt for a Yukon w/o air conditioning. You may also need to know the amperage rating of your alternator because apparently it makes a difference.

belt

I figured i'd need a smaller belt but the diagram under the hood shows the two routes with and without a/c but it show's the without going over a pully I don't have right now. It looks like there is a place on the block below the compressor where a pulley would go though. I'm wondering what else might be needed? Would I just bolt a pulley onto this spot and i'm good to go? Is it a kit from the dealership or parts store?

you should be able to pick up (or look at) the pulley at an auto parts store to see if its missing a bracket or bolts directly on.

you may have to pull the compressor off the engine to be able to run the other belt and pulley.

I think that dorman makes a bypass pulley for this truck. It bolts in place of the compressor so you use the same belt and route it the same way. Probably the eaisest thing. The ones I've got were under $30.

You could take the current belt off and run a string around the pulleys that you want to use. Take a measurement of the string, keeping the adjustment travel of the adjuster in mind and head to the auto parts store to see if you can find a belt of similar length.

I am not sure I would go that route, what would he do with his ac lines? Remove them? Now he has removed the AC all together and it will hurt resale and turn off any potential buyers if he was ever to sell. All this because he "Thinks" the compressor is going... Seems kind of aggressive..

I wonder if the stock compressor could be gutted to now just be a pully... Hmmm..

If the compressor is bad, whats the difference if it's there or not. It may hurt the resale, but it's a 96 so the resale is going to be poor anyhow. Most vehicals made over 12 years ago are not going to have working a/c anyhow. As for the lines, plug them and zip tie them out of the way somewhere. He could unplug the clutch so it would not ever engage. Also if it's just the bearing in the clutch that's bad you could install a new clutch.

You could pull the outer part of the clutch off and just use the compressor as a "idler pulley".

compressor

I'm pretty sure it's the bearing in the compressor that is going. It's been making a grinding noise for about four months now. I figure if I just leave it it will seize up on me and tear my belt and i'll be stranded. I can see a place on the compressor bracket that looks like it will take another pulley but will any pulley from the dealer come with a bearing in the middle that I can just bolt on? I'm going to hit the wreckers next week and see what I can find.
