I've got a 2000 Tahoe that makes an "erp" noise when I hit bumps sometimes at slow speeds, as well as when I start or release the brakes at a stop sign, etc. It sounds like it's only coming from the rear where I have drum brakes.

I got on the rear bumper and really kinda jumped up and down and gave the truck a good shake up and down and left and right and not a single noise resembling this "erp."

I did notice that if I put the brakes on and sit at the light and it's real quiet when I let off the brakes but before I gas it I hear the sound.

I don't really know how to describe the sound - it's almost like a very slight version of squeeling tires or something...and it's very quick, like half a second, but audible. Some of time it's louder than others.

Trying to avoid paying the dealership to "diagnose" it...so any help would be appreciated.

EDIT: I forgot to mention it has about 110k miles and seems to run well other than this. Just worried it could be a tranny problem.

Also, what else should I do to this truck that I just bought? I was thinking of changing the plugs, oil, tranny fluid, and maybe coolant. Any suggestions on spark plugs, gaps on the spark plugs, or types of fluid to use?

Well since you typed you have drum rear brakes, I would recommend having your rear brakes cleaned and adjusted. The sound I think is the springs expanding and contracting once you lay off the brake.

I also have a noise like that but mines more of a 'squeak' than an 'erp'.

Mine turned out to be the shoulder belt pulley in the drivers seat. When it's in a certain spot and I move just a bit, it makes a faint squeak behind me that drove me nuts pinning it down.

The noise it still there as I haven't yet figured out how to get to it and it's right next to the side airbag that I would rather not set off.

Good luck with yours.
