i need a code reader. not an expensive beast, just something that will effectively get me the codes. where can i get one? i know about the laptop and software type, but i don't have a laptop and don't need one, so that route is too much expense for just pulling the codes. i would like one that will will erase them too. my obdII works great and was only $30.00. is there one similar for obdI? my tahoe is a 1995 BTW, so i need obdI.

second question, i know dodge....that kills me just typing that name....has a series of key on/off that will flash the code numbers. does my tahoe do something like that?

* Turn ignition switch to OFF position
* Locate Data Link Connector (DLC), see image below.
* Jumper the A&B terminals(a paper clip or a jumper wire work ok)
* Turn Ignition switch to ON position.
* Count the flashes on the "CHECK ENGINE" or "SERVICE ENGINE" light.
* FLASH, pause, FLASH, FLASH = code 12
* NOTE: Some 94 & 95 models do not have the B terminal. In which case a scanner is required.
* NOTE: Some 94 & 95 models that DO have the A & B terminals still require a scanner.
* All vehicles after 96 are OBDII,and require a scanner to access them.

GM Data Link Connector
12 Pin DLC
A - Ground

F - TCC
B - Test Terminal

G - Fuel Pump
C - Air Injection

H - Brake Sense Speed Input
E - Serial Data

M - Serial Data
Clearing Trouble Codes

Diagnostic trouble codes may be cleared by disconnecting the battery ground cable for at least 20 seconds. Reconnect negative battery cable and recheck codes to confirm the repair.

A regular OBDII code scanner will not pull ABS codes, that is a different system.
You can get a good code scanner from Autozone that will read OBDII codes. They also have an ABS scanner, not sure how old it goes,it's like $2-300 though.

Remember also, codes in the computer don't tell you WHAT is wrong. They will only tell you a condition that is not within spec.
You must diagnose what exactly is wrong :D
ABS codes are pretty good about telling exactly what circuit is bad though, bit mapped ABS codes are awesome though Ford is the only one I know that uses them.
Not messed with GM ABS codes-I deleted the ABS on my 97 and 92 Yukons :D

I have an actron OBD2 scanner I got from GAY-C WHITNEY for 84.99 last week. it was so cheap, I couldnt say no. I havent used it yet. the software that ceom with it is cool, though.

Thanks for the welcome. :D

Basically you just take the motor off,and run the lines OUT from master cylinder to the corresponding IN line on the combo valve.

IIRC,one line is larger than the other so you can't mix them up.
Then you cut the original line from the pass front and put it into a T fitting with the driver front going in the other side.
The rear line goes into corresponding output on combo valve.
The remaining line from the T goes to corresponding output on combo valve.
Doesn't even throw an ABS light on my 92,haven't drove the 97 since I did it to it but imagine it will have a light.
The ABS light on the 92 IIRC is flagged from the combo valve anyway so if it's all good then no issues I guess.

Been awhile since I did this,so I might need to go take a look and make sure that's all it was.
But the 92 drives perfectly fine, brakes great and lockup isn't uneven.
I'll try to remember to pop the hood and make sure that's all it was.
If noone remembers the specs and facts on the ABS diag info and how the light flags i'll look it up if needed,I remember it was a very simple system though.

Honestly i'm a Ford tech, but GM trucks are my hobby. I have all this info laying somewhere, but haven't spent any time on my projects in months due to different issues.
times coming really soon though, and i foresee a flurry of activity and lots of free summit crap in my personal shop.

I work at Autozone part time some evening's so i've gotten to use that little Actron scanner,it's not too bad considering you can view freeze frame data.
I use a couple different laptop based scanners, they're great for viewing pids and graphing. Just looking at pids can allow you to start ruling things out in diagnosis.
