Has anyone damaged their roof or lift gate by opening it up when there is ice on the roof? I had 1/2 inch of solid ice on the rear hinge area of the lift gate. Didn't realize it until I pushed the button to open it. It sounded like an explosion when the ice popped. I got up on a ladder and inspected everything and it looks OK but it really had me concerned that I might have done some sheet metal damage.

Just wondering if this has happened to anyone else.

The Car's metal can not be damaged by that little amount of ICE, just make sure you don't pour any hot water on the ice so it doesn't leak onto to the window and crack it!

I've had this happen... Ice was thick enough on top of the liftgate that it did not even open. The chimes sounded, it tried to open, made some loud popping noises then chimed again (alerting you that it could not open due to some sort of obstruction).

Nothing happened to it in my case, though I was worried about the noise.

Also, we get lots of ice where I'm from and I've been pouring hot water on icy doors/windows for 15 years. Never heard of anyone breaking their glass because of this.

If its about 10Degrees outside and they're is a layer of Ice on your winshield and you come outside and pour boiling water on it, it causes some parts of the glass to expand and crack there you go.
