A coworker of mine at work has a 1999 tahoe he wants to get rid of. It is a 4x4 model with around 160k on it. I have a few questions about it.
1. He said the front AC does not cool very well but that the rear seat AC works great. Are there two compressors on this SUV? It would seem to me that it would work good on both front and back or not at all.
2. He mentioned that the transmission makes a whining sound on the highway. Hope this is not a differential or transfer case problem but am not sure.
3. It needs new tires. I plan to use this on my farm to haul a tractor with and general trailer towing. Any tires that are recommended for on road / off road driving? (I have 105 acres with logging roads on it)
I can probably get this SUV for around 1k so even if I have to put some work into it I think it would possibly be worth it (unless the transmission or engine needs rebuilding). He said the interior is in good shape (leather) and that the exterior is in good shape also except for a few door dings. He just does not want to mess with it anymore and his wife wants it out of the yard.
Can anyone tell me what I should look out for when I test drive it? Any other weak spots or things that fail on this vintage Tahoe? I am handy with cars so I can do some of the work myself. Is it reasonable to try to get 300k out of one or is that pushing things too far? I had a 1985 Caprice that made it to 315k but I had it since it was new and changed fluids regularly.
