I am looking at a 2000 GMC Yukon. The odometer reads 71,000 miles. This seems pretty low. The vehicle is in great shape and well taken care of.
Is there a way the current owner could have messed with the odometer?

I have never owned a GMC but I know with Ford I have heard stories of owners messing with the odometer. I just want to make sure it doesn’t have 171,000 miles on it.

Thanks!

You can get the VIN and run it through CarFax. Then you can see if the odometer is consistent with any mileage history that CarFax finds - it uses state vehicle inspections, insurance records, and sometimes repair records to track mileage.

I checked the CarFax and it said the vehicle had 50,000 miles in 2002 when he bought it. He is the only the second owner so that would mean in 6 years he has driven 21,000 miles! He mentioned the gas gage doesn’t work. Could that be a sign of him tampering with the odometer?

Gas gauge not working probably means fuel pump is gonna go out! Had that happen on the old '99 sub I had. But it went for 2 years before the fuel pump finally went. If it's the same fuel pump on the one your looking at, the sending unit for the fuel gauge is integrated with the fuel pump, in the tank.
