Hello everyone!

I have a 98 Yukon that I have put a new ignition cylinder in. The truck will not start with the new cylinder. It just cuts off immediately.

I tried leaving the battery on for 10 minutes, then retrying to start it. But after 3 times, I've given up after killing my battery.

Can anyone help me out? I have no idea what to do. Replacing the cylinder was so simple, but actually getting it to run now is a headache.

Thank you!

Your coil wire is not seated all the way

When I put the old ignition cylinder back in, it will start and run. (The old cylinder is very tricky to get to turn)

Slammed, COIL WIRE?

Jajehalbig, PK2 has the sensor in the steering column. Does the key turn freely? Does it actually fire up then die? Does the Security light flash/ stay on?

Lester,
I don't know what PK2 is.
Yes.The key turns freely. And it fires up and then abruptly dies. The security light is solid when the battery is engaged, but goes away after maybe 3 seconds.

Thanks

Maybe it lost its security from old key. It thinks its being stolen, so it shuts off. I think the dealer only one who can fix that.

I sure hope not. It's not a chipped key. And the original ignition cylinder works, it's just a pain in the butt. I didn't figure sliding the cylinder from my 96 Tahoe into the 98 Yukon would cause this kind of reaction.

I know they are not chipped but it has to learn it from what I was told. You don't have the time to do a new key because you replaced the whole assy. If it works fine with the old then you put the new one in and it doesn't, then my money in on the security feature stopping the truck. They had to reset mine after they put a new transmission in mine for some reason. He said he had to have an original key to.

If you only replaced the tumblers then it should work, Is the key turning back too far and into the off position?

I don't know what tumblers are. I replaced what I call the lock cylinder. The key seems to be turning as it should. Everything goes normal up until it starts and then quickly dies.

The tumblers are what the key plugs into and what I suspect you replaced (the lock cylinder). Does the key return to just before crank after cranking?

I played with it again today.

The security light is solid when the battery is engaged, but turns off after about 2-3 seconds.
When I turn the key to run, it starts up and then quickly dies. At this time, the security light flashes 4 times and then turns off.
The key seems to stay in the run position, and doesn't seem to go back to the position just before cranking.

Hmmm....... Security light at first is in bulb test (with the other lights)

Try This

10 Minute Learn Procedure

•Starting from the off position.
•Attempt to start the engine, then release the key to Run position (vehicle will not start).
•Observe the security light located in the instrument cluster, after approximately 10 minutes the security light will turn OFF. Turn OFF the ignition, and wait 5 seconds.
•The vehicle is now ready to relearn the Passlock Sensor Data Code and/or passwords on the next ignition switch transition from OFF to CRANK.
Important
The vehicle learns the Passlock Sensor Data Code and/or resistance on the next ignition switch transition from OFF to CRANK. You must turn the ignition OFF before attempting to start the vehicle.
However if the column you used is a 97 and passlock 1 not 2 this may not work.
As 1998 is passlock 2.

This is the relearn procedure, there is a 30 minute one that may need to be done.....

I tried this learn process again today. It did not work.

•Observe the security light located in the instrument cluster, after approximately 10 minutes the security light will turn OFF. Turn OFF the ignition, and wait 5 seconds.
My security light turns off after about 3-4 seconds.

Performed as instructed, ensuring switch was off, and waited 5 seconds, before cranking. Same result: engine starts initially, but shuts off immediately.

I did notice that on my replacement ignition cylinder I am able to turn the key back toward me (passed the off position) to be able to listen to the radio, ect. And on the ignition cylinder I am trying to replace, this cannot be done.

I'm dying to replace the ignition cylinder because with the current one, the key has to be placed in the ignition just right, at an awkward angle for it to work and turn the cylinder which is a real pain. Also, I've swapped all of the handles and locks from my old Tahoe already, since the ones that came with this Yukon were painted and all busted up.

There are forums online that will explain the re-learn process. Turn the key to run for ten minutes then turn off and wait about 20 seconds and try to crank. If not do it again. It might take three cycles of this for the process. I have had the same problem with my 2002. Sometimes getting out of the car and locking it and the nun locking helps too.

Have you returned the ign cylinder for another? Perhaps they gave you the wrong one?
