My beaut took a knee a few weeks back and I've decided to do surgery rather than bury her in the classifieds. Leading up to this, I noticed a loss of power especially in and out 3rd gear, and a week later she started knocking (can't be good.) My neighbor and I planned on taking out the engine and diagnosis it. Rebuild if we can, otherwise buy a new crate.
Once the engine was out we cracked open the chest walls and found that the number 8 bearings had spun, and gorged a pretty deep cavity into the journal of the crankshaft. I assume if #8 bearing is the one spinning, the other bearings must not have been receiving their drink of texas tea. Hence, the knock, oil pressure indicator at 0, and the loss of pw. Seems simple enough...new crankshaft, rebuild it is!
Dropped the block and the heads off at the machine shop only to have them call me the next day and tell me that he found 3 cracks in the heads. "clear"....shock! "clear"....shock! beep beep....
Well, now the cost of a rebuild just went up by $500with cracked heads added to the cost a crankshaft($200 -/+), new bearings... Anywho, I predict at this rate more surprises would be upon us.
Called the machine shop up and told em to cancel the clean.... New engine it is!
(I'm sure a lot of you are designing your scenarios here, and I assure you all, mine were pretty good to. especially after reading through this forume like a 14 y/o on porn site. "383 stroker...400 crank, shave the block, Hydro Rock & Rollers...)
Listen in the end, This is my ride, to work, road trips, kids...you get the picture. I just feel that once you invite change into one thing, other things will break because they were not tested nor designed to be part of a package other than what is OEM. To the contrary, and correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't this how most become weekend garage junkies, trying to replace some part each weekend to keep up with the new parts you've added?
ANYWHO...! My Question is this...
I bought a new crate engine from JEGS, 12530282. Since I'll have a new engine, what are some other parts that I should also be replacing along with a new engine? I assume I might as well buy a tranny rebuild kit since there's 172,000K on her, surly that would be the next to go especially with a new engine trhowing it around. What else though? Fuel pumps, oil pumps, starters, hoses...? I understand the old adage "if ain't broke, don't fix it" but hell, I'd rather bath in grease for a week while I have the engine out than cancel plans with family friends every other weekend to fix&rep. (No offense, gents).
If you're reading this, I'd sure love to hear any suggestions you might have even if it veers from the question. tips on breaking in a new engine...or likewise.
Thank you all in advance and thank you all for contributing to this site and feeding my tahoe porn addiction. (man that 383 stroker devil is still resting on my damn shoulder...go away!:flamingdevil
