Im leaving for a 500 mile trip tomorrow. I have had a roar coming from the front for about 8 months now. I replaced hubs/bearings rotors and pads. The noise is the carrier bearings in the front diff. I can wiggle them and see the play. It looks like the drivers side only. I checked the fluid and there is some metal in there. It is still brownish red with some silver streaks in it.

Now for the question.

Will it survive the trip? What are my odds?

What happens if it fails?

Any help is appreciated.

If it's already been 8 months I don't see why it couldn't make another 500miles, but it's hard to tell without seeing it. Sounds like you dont have the time to do it before you go. If the bearings are just wearing down and just making noise with a little play you should be ok, but yes you should change it when you can.
