Hello All,
I have a 97 Tahoe just short of 200k miles. I have had a winding sound for a while with the service engine soon light also on. I replaced the alternator and the engine light went off but the winding sound remains.

My next thought is transmission or water pump?? As I drive and accelerate the noise gets louder and when I put the vehicle into park, the noise is the same as I rev the engine.

I am hoping this might eliminate the tranny problem but really have no clue so your opinions are needed!.

Thanks

Ok, so the SES light went away? - did you unplug the battery? If so the SES light will probably come back on... I too have a wining sound.. only its kinda quiet - and i really think its air.. but who knows - it may be a bearing up front in one of the pulleys

Just curiousity,

Can it be a vacuum line leak? That is where you will hear air whining/ or whistling.
