my buddy's shop charges like 30 buck a rim for powder coating, and i guess u cant powder coat aluminum, so he dipped htem to remove the clear coat and then sprayed them in his paint booth then sealed them and cleared them they look great!! someone already asked me here i got them cuz he wanted to do it to his and they dont look like stock rims, so its nice i like them

I love the dark rims. I got a set of the AR teflon coated and they match the grey on my truck perfectly.

Clean 95... I've been trying to learn more about this... I know the powder is sprayed on and then baked... but what do you mean they can't can't powder coat aluminum?
Also... I thought powdercoating doesn't use a clear coat.. it's just a gloss powder.. kinda like a single stage paint job. If your friend dipped them, was he trying to get down to the bare aluminum?

Reason I ask is because I have several sets of rims I'd like to get powdercoated... but some of my rims are bare metal (bead blasted already) while some are a painted finish... I want to know what my options are...etc.

Thanks for the info... and your wheels do look great!

by dip i mean, the rim gets put into a acid type wash where they take all the paint/clear coat off and take it to bare aluminum. then once the rim is in "raw" state they use a self etching primer then bake it, in a standard paint booth then 0nce the primer has "cured" the rim gets sprayed the desired color, for instance flat black i think its 2 or 3 coats, then they put a semi gloss coat over the top to protect the new paint from the elements its kinda like a clear but its just not shinny
i guess aluminum isnt powdercoatable because its a soft type of metal.
im not totally sure why but i can find out exactly why if u like, what i would do to save money if u want to do it ur self is just wet sand the rim a little then use the self etching automotive primer in a spray can then spray the wheels whatever color u want, the only reason i had a shop do it is cuz my friend owns the shop and did if as a favor, and thanks, they do look good! ived been asked numerous times where i got the rims by other Chevy owners! LOL

Thanks for the info!~

I wonder about just spray painting.. or even painting the wheels at a body shop... I know for show cars its not a big deal... but I at work we have a car wash that blasts the wheels w/ high pressure... helps keep the wheels clean, but seems like it might make spray can paint chip.... I can't say for sure yet, but I just like the idea of a durable coat on the wheels, otherwise I'd be all over the rattle can wheel paints.

Has anyone painted their rims? Not powdercoat... and how's it holding up on your rigs?
I have a buddy w/ rattle canned his Tundra rims... (with rim paint) and it looks great, but I have to ask him how it's holding up.

I'm curious too. My rims are an old chrome finish and they're getting kind of rusty around the hub area. Would that same method work on them? I think they'd look sweet if they were a flat black.
Thoughts on whether this would work? I'd imagine I would do a lot of coats to make them as durable as possible.
