Lowering a 4WD?

It's 6 years old now and I think it's time for a facelift for my '01. I considered putting a lift on it but with a little girl and a wife that's only 5'1 it would make it difficult for them to get in. So I'm thinking about hot rodding it. I don't want to slam it to the point that it's impractical but maybe just a few inches to give it a mean stance and lower the center of gravity.

Years ago (early 90s) it was said that lowering a 4WD was a no-no because it threw everything out of whack, but I don't know if that was more fact than rumor. I'm wondering if there are any potential problems with it?

I have a 2000 NBS Suburban 1500 4x4 that is lowered 4" in the front and 3" in the rear and I have no problems with the 4wd. The only time it binds up is when doing tight turns which is very rare and I usually just disengage the auto 4wd.

It's lowered in the front with McGaughy's 2" dropped spindles and the torsion keys are cranked down. I will be installing the 2" lowering keys when the weather gets warmer so I can go lower. In the rear are Belltech 3" drop springs.
