Hello everyone, this is my first post. I am glad to see that there is a forum for our SUVs. I had to add coolant for the first time this am when the light came on. This raised my awarness and this pm when returning from work i notice coolant smell. Checked under hood and no leaks from hoses, rad or expasnion tank. I did notice smoke (from coolant dropping on engine) from behind throttle body, it looked like it was pooling above the fan pully area. I have no idea what it could be. Does anyone have a guess?

Thanks

My 2002 Tahoe had a coolant leak for a couple of years and I could never pin point it. It was a slight leak that left no pooling but I did have small orange(rusty looking) stains spattered on the driveway. I would have to add about a half gallon of water every month or so due to the low coolant light coming on. Finally the water pump started leaking from the drain hole so I replaced it one day. I could see that the water pump had been leaking around the gasket on the upper part of the intake all of this time. Replacing the water pump has gotten rid of the mysterious leak and know just wait until your catalytic converters start plugging up on you.

This seems to be as typical of a problem as the one DRL going out on these and the heater getting stuck in the hot position.

I have a pinhole leak in my radiator apparently. I haven't checked the water pump, but that may be another small leak.

How can you tell and what happens once the cats gets plugged up?

The cats are unrelated to the coolant problem but in my case the service engine light was on and the code read catalyst below threshold. The tahoe ran like crap and when you accelerate it just wouldn't go like it was constipated.
