I've had her for about 2 weeks now - 95 Tahoe LT 4 door
Hello all - please be gentle, I am a newbie to the board and a newbie to the SUV world - however, I am a car guy for sure. :yesnod: I have been making the commute from DC to my office just west of Philadelphia (the burbs - YUCK) for nearly 3 years now, having an apartment 1 mile from my office and my permanent residence in Arlington, VA - 1.5 miles from the Pentagon. My mission started a few months ago, that is to find a suitable vehicle to keep "up here" (in Philly) and Amtrak back and forth and stop putting the miles on my Avalon and the wear and tear on my senses - if you drive I95 weekly - you know what I mean.
I finally thought about a Tahoe/Yukon - I mean hell, why not, the market seems to be at the bottom and I will only drive it maybe a mile or two a day here - so gas mileage is definately not an issue. Well, I found a dream deal, a one owner, 1995 Tahoe LT, 157k, Green/Silver two tone, and from a Tahoe guy. An ex contractor at Gitmo and an avid Ultralight pilot and attorney. Grey Leather, new Cooper tires (still have the nubs), tow package, running boards, all records and documentation, great interior (no rips / stains), factory CD, fresh VA emissions and safety inspection, and best of all EVERYTHING and I mean EVERYTHING works perfect, all for $2000 (with a full tank).
Well, I have been driving it off and on for 2 weeks and ABSOLUTELY enjoy "the beast" - very nice ride - although, I must admit, with all of the tree-huggers in Arlington, I have gotten a couple of sneers and evil grins :mad2: I just smile and wave :cool2: The towing history has been ultralight planes (long and light) and thats it - I swear I think the hoe has another good ten years left in her - I hope she proves me right.
One thing I have noticed is that she takes about 1 to 1.5 seconds to engage into reverse, all other gears are fine - this might be a sign of the tranny going, but with the miles that I will be putting on her (to/from the office = 1 mile, to/from Amtrak = 2.5 miles) - it should last me quite some time. I have a couple of questions - if indeed the tranny is going, what would you recommend to save it as long as possible? Also, I've added a locking gas cap - although it is mainly a deterrent (if they want it they will get it, right?) - any other ideas in regards to making it more difficult to steal the precious go-go juice? And lastly - any suggestions about using 4wd high? Stop before engaging (floor shifter) - wheels straight (I know that sounds like a stupid question, but some rides it does matter) - any other helpful hints?
Oh, another thing - after having it for two weeks, the owner called me and told me he found the OEM cargo cover and the extra key fob - what a guy!!!
I'm attaching some pics - hope you like - sorry for the EXTREMELY long post - like I said, I'm just a "car guy"...
