I've had her for about 2 weeks now - 95 Tahoe LT 4 door

Hello all - please be gentle, I am a newbie to the board and a newbie to the SUV world - however, I am a car guy for sure. :yesnod: I have been making the commute from DC to my office just west of Philadelphia (the burbs - YUCK) for nearly 3 years now, having an apartment 1 mile from my office and my permanent residence in Arlington, VA - 1.5 miles from the Pentagon. My mission started a few months ago, that is to find a suitable vehicle to keep "up here" (in Philly) and Amtrak back and forth and stop putting the miles on my Avalon and the wear and tear on my senses - if you drive I95 weekly - you know what I mean.

I finally thought about a Tahoe/Yukon - I mean hell, why not, the market seems to be at the bottom and I will only drive it maybe a mile or two a day here - so gas mileage is definately not an issue. Well, I found a dream deal, a one owner, 1995 Tahoe LT, 157k, Green/Silver two tone, and from a Tahoe guy. An ex contractor at Gitmo and an avid Ultralight pilot and attorney. Grey Leather, new Cooper tires (still have the nubs), tow package, running boards, all records and documentation, great interior (no rips / stains), factory CD, fresh VA emissions and safety inspection, and best of all EVERYTHING and I mean EVERYTHING works perfect, all for $2000 (with a full tank).

Well, I have been driving it off and on for 2 weeks and ABSOLUTELY enjoy "the beast" - very nice ride - although, I must admit, with all of the tree-huggers in Arlington, I have gotten a couple of sneers and evil grins :mad2: I just smile and wave :cool2: The towing history has been ultralight planes (long and light) and thats it - I swear I think the hoe has another good ten years left in her - I hope she proves me right.

One thing I have noticed is that she takes about 1 to 1.5 seconds to engage into reverse, all other gears are fine - this might be a sign of the tranny going, but with the miles that I will be putting on her (to/from the office = 1 mile, to/from Amtrak = 2.5 miles) - it should last me quite some time. I have a couple of questions - if indeed the tranny is going, what would you recommend to save it as long as possible? Also, I've added a locking gas cap - although it is mainly a deterrent (if they want it they will get it, right?) - any other ideas in regards to making it more difficult to steal the precious go-go juice? And lastly - any suggestions about using 4wd high? Stop before engaging (floor shifter) - wheels straight (I know that sounds like a stupid question, but some rides it does matter) - any other helpful hints?

Oh, another thing - after having it for two weeks, the owner called me and told me he found the OEM cargo cover and the extra key fob - what a guy!!!

I'm attaching some pics - hope you like - sorry for the EXTREMELY long post - like I said, I'm just a "car guy"...:D

Welcome to the forum. First off the gas cap you added isn't totally necessary. The distance between the filler and the tank is very long so it will be hard getting gas out, and it has a nice anti-siphon valve on it, so I mean it wasn't totally necessary. You got yourself a heck of a deal. I'm envious you got a cargo cover, I really want one of those. I'd say with the tranny, that as long as it's still shifting keep it. When you start to feel it slip or just plain not work, that's probably a good warning to replace that bad boy. Enjoy your car man.

QLC - thanks for the kind words - I do like the color combination, even though I was looking for an all white Tahoe, the Teal two tone has grown on me, especially with the light grey (almost silver) leather interior. Yes, I do have the manual and will be reading it carefully - I just thought there might be some "helpful unwritten hints" in regards to tranny/4wd care that other's could throw my way.

bsamoul - thanks for the kind words as well - and thanks for the info regarding the filler tank and anti-siphon valve. Yeah - I thought $2000 for a one owner in such incredible condition was a great deal - especially with all the inspections just done (always tough in Northern VA) and the real nice tires & wheels.

All - I'll be posting more pictures soon - I'm currently in Philly and will be back in DC this weekend - bringing the Tahoe to Philly to stay - looking forward to a good road trip in a "high rider". It is kind of ironic - I ALWAYS stay clear of the SUVs and the mini-vans on I-95 (can't see around them) in my yoda (Avalon), but once you are "in command" of one, it SURE IS NICE :cool2:

Glad to be part of the community - I hope to be able to contribute more soon.

damn that was a good price. congrats on the new ride and welcome to the forum!

eh, i put a locking cap on mine as well. more of a deterent than anything. all you need to get them off is a big pair of channel locks to squeeze the sides. (usefull info when you take a road trip with a spare set of keys that doesn't have the cap key on it... haha)

i have a freshly rebuilt (and quite beefed up) trans in my truck and it takes it a second to shift into reverse.

Great lookin tahoe. i have a 95 4 dr single tone maroon. but definitely a fan of the two tone.

1st.. reverse does take a second to engage on the 95s. just an age thing i guess.

2nd.. when engaging 4wd high, i have had the best results under 25 mph, and idk about wheels straight havent really paid attention to it. i normally just shift when i need it without thinkin of wheel position.
