I bought new one of the first 4-door Tahoes in Memphis and now am in a '99 that is showing its age. Looking to move up to the next series for <$7500. I renovate houses and this will be a work truck so I am thinking about removing the 3rd row seats, carpet, plastic panels, etc. from the back to preserve them. Maybe even the 2nd row. I'll have to be much more careful jumping in dirty. OTOH I may want to tow my Porsche to race tracks so I want to keep it nice - at least in front.
I've been surprised at the high mileage of these trucks. I sold my '95 for $1000 w/ 185,000 miles and bought the '99 for $3000 3 1/2 years ago when it had 144,686, and it has <170,000 now. And its a POS!
When shopping I've routinely ignored anything over 175,000 miles - is that wise or am I being too picky?
I ask because this afternoon I looked at an '03 SLT that appears in incredibly good condition - no dents, good tires, clean, cold air, driver's leather seat replaced, no stains, everything works, clean engine bay, good spare, sounds good. You would never think it has 211,000 miles on it! It was obviously very well cared for. It is at a used car lot and he guy told me he bought it at an auction so no records or history. Asking $5000. Should I pursue this or run from it? It does not have a receiver so I suppose that is good condition-wise but it will cost me a few more bucks if I decide to tow w/ it. Can I even tow OK w/o the towing pkg?
Any other buying tips appreciated.
