All:

I just entered a contract last night to purchase a GM Certified 2004 Z71 (dvd, leather) for $20k. The vehicle has exactly 50,000 miles on it.

After signing the contract (I haven't paid for the vehicle yet), I left the dealership feeling a bit remorseful. I made it a point to not buy a vehicle that appeared to have towed anything with it's previous owner, but after calling the dealership that service this particular vehicle for 3.5 years, I learned that the previous owner trailered his boat with it.

THIS HAS ME FRIGHTENED!

I also feel that I may have overpaid for the car. I'm thinking about backing out and trying to buy a more modern ('05) Tahoe with the same dealership, but I don't know how they'll react.

Can you provide any guidance re: Tahoe's that have been used to trailer loads? I'm afraid I'll get the car and the thing will die on me, or the tranny will go, etc, right after the remainder of the power-train warranty runs out in 1.25 years.

I'm freaking out. Sorry to hassle you, but your responses will be appreciated.

Thanks,
THEKID

If I am not mistaken, and please correct if I am wrong for those who know, you have up to 3 days from the date of purchase to get out of a contract. At least that is how it is here in NC but not 100% certain. After 3 days, then you are S.O.L. Check over your contract and see what it states.

Here in Pa. you also have three days to break the contract, or bring the vehicle back in to return, legally. That being said, if you changed your mind, and are looking at another vehicle at the same dealer, I really don't think he will care. The key here is you are trying to purchase another truck from him, so he isn't out a "sale". I would suggest you just tell him what you are thinking, and after learning about the PO towing with it, you would feel better changing vehicles. After all, it is your money.

As others have said, you can walk away... you havent given them a dime yet and they cannot do anything to you.

As for trailering... These are trucks, they are designed in mind for towing items and such. Assuming you have service records and such, i would think you are ok. Hell, you could have the trans serviced as peace of mind and you still have some warranty left.

The drive train is pretty bullit proof on these trucks anymore. I really dont think you have much to worry about.

just another thought...it being a certified used, this 04 should qualify for an extended warranty. see what the dealer can do for you with pricing on the warranty. just a thought, if you really like this one.

It sounds pricey, and you can get out of it. They don't care if you buy another one instead, but they might not appreciate your new approach to pricing concerns. Good luck.

Go with your gut, if you feel that you shouldn’t buy it then don’t. Hey you’re the one paying $20,000 of your hard earned money not them. I feel you should buy the best and newest vehicle that you can afford. If I knew someone towed a lot with a Tahoe I was interested in I probably wouldn’t buy it, but that’s me. A warranty is a great thing to have and can save you a lot of money in the long run. But I also look at the time I might have to spend running it back and forth trying to have something fixed. My spare time is very valuable to me. Good luck!

Does it have a tranny oil cooler?
If not, then I would definitely cancel the sale. Towing a boat without the cooler pretty much guarantees a shorter life on the tranny.
