My stock 99 5.7L cracked both heads already at 140,000 miles. The guy that does my machine work is an old friend and he said that in his experience these heads crack more often than not. Now that being said, are there any alternative stock heads that hold up better? For instance the 243 heads hold up better on my LS base motors than the 241 heads. I've been told before that a "vortec head is a vortec head" and any of them will work. Or maybe an aftermarket alternative that has held up well? And feedback is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Also, just for kicks, what are compatible long blocks I could just drop in?

For my money I have always used Jasper Engines for long blocks or heads or transmissions. Best quality IMO, best warranty IMO and they rebuild with any updates already done at the time of rebuild.

I think there are 2 major vortec 350 heads, and IIRC they were pretty comparable.....

How did they crack? You overheat them?
