I just saw this on Comcast.net

WASHINGTON - General Motors Corp. said Friday it was recalling 944,000 vehicles because of a problem with a windshield wiper fluid system that could lead to a fire.

More than 850,000 sport utility vehicles, trucks and passenger cars in the United States and nearly 100,000 vehicles in Canada, Mexico and the Middle East are involved in the recall, the company said.

GM said it includes the 2008 Buick Enclave, 2006-2008 Buick Lucerne, 2006-2008 Cadillac DTS, 2007-2008 Cadillac Escalade, 2007-2008 Cadillac Escalade ESV, 2007-2008 Cadillac Escalade EXT, 2007-2008 Chevrolet Avalanche, Silverado, Tahoe and Suburban, 2007-2008 GMC Acadia, Sierra, Yukon and Yukon XL, 2006-2008 Hummer H2 and 2007-2008 Saturn Outlook.

The recall involves vehicles with a heated washer fluid system. A short circuit in the system could cause electrical features to malfunction, which could lead to an odor, smoke or potentially a fire.

GM spokeswoman Carolyn Markey said there have been nine reports of fires and three of them have been linked to the system. There have been no accidents or injuries connected to the defect, she said.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration opened an investigation last February into 2007 Yukon and Tahoe vehicles over potential engine compartment fires. In June, the highway safety agency upgraded its investigation into about 2.7 million 2007-2008 GM trucks and SUVs and reported allegations of 41 engine fires.

Dealers will install a wire harness with an in-line fuse to fix the problem free of charge, GM said.

For more information, owners may contact Buick at (866) 608-8080, Cadillac at (800) 982-2339, Chevrolet at (800) 630-2438, Saturn at (800) 972-8876, GMC at (866) 996-9436 or Hummer at (800) 732-5493.

This is probably related to the NHTSA investigation in the engine compartment fires.

A pretty simple fix to add the inline fuse.

Time to talk to your dealers and go in to get this done.

Chevy should be sending out recall notices. You can also call a Chevy dealership, give them your VIN# and they should let you know if your vehicle qualifies for the recall.

Yes standard on LTZ, but optional only on LT3- If you have Convenience package 2 (RPO Code PDD), with Power Liftgate and Rainsense Wipers, then you also have Heated Washer Fluid.

This sucks...what an inconvenience. I've only had mine for two months! Is this something that we need to get fixed asap or can it wait like a week or so?

Maybe they should've called it "Inconvenience Pack 2", eh?

Statistically speaking it's not extremely urgent and could wait a bit, but the truth is that time only matters to those few trucks that are already on the path to failure, I guess. And we don't know which ones obviously, so I want to take it in within 3 or 4 weeks. Even then I hope I'm taking it seriously enough. Just occured to me though that I could disconnect that **** until it's fixed...

BTW, why is the fix to just install an inline fuse? Might as well install a dedicated fire extinguisher if they can't replace the cause of the short.

My '07 does not have the powerliftgate or the rainsense wipers, but I do the the heated washers.

The problem with the inline fuse is once it pops and the truck is out of warranty, your footing the bill to find the short...

GM needs to find a fix for this, not a quick and cheap fix.

You will receive a letter about the recall if your truck is included. I read on another forum that the dealers won't have replacement parts until November. Call your dealer if you are concerned.

I just called my dealer. The recall is to pull the fuse out now and then wait until the new wiring harness is engineered. I am just now waiting for my truck to burn so I can get a new 09 at GM's expense.
