My 02 Tahoe 5.3L has never had the fuel filter changed. I went to buy one and discovered that there are two different ones. There is a regular one and one for flex fuel. Was flex fuel an option in 2002? The fueld door mentions E85 and that is flex fuel correct? Help!

Yes sir. Flex fuel was offered in the later 02 models. E85 denotes flexfuel. Flexfuel tahoes have "Z" in the vin, while the regular 5.3 has "T".

I learned something from your response - my VIN has a 'Z' right in the middle so, based on your statement, I have a flex fuel Yukon. I had no idea - I always thought GM put some special badging on the outside to indicate.

What does this mean to me? I live in the DC area and I would expect to see a lot of 'green' E85 stuff at gas stations, but I can't say that I do. Of course, you can't throw a rock without hitting a Prius in this politically correct area. I jokingly tell my kids that my Yukon is "the anti-hybrid."

I digress - without my doing a Google study, can you give me a quick education on what benefit E85 capability has for me?

Thanks - this forum is a daily stop for me - I always learn something new. You guys do a great job!

There isn't any benefit to E85 besides the fact that it isn't 100% gasoline.

Expect your mileage to drop 30% or better with E85. Or roughly 16mpg to 11mpg.

That's true. Also, the initial cost per gallon is cheaper, but the MPG loss doesn't make up for the price difference, and in some cases you'll spend more in the end by filling up more often and traveling less on a tank of gas.
But the main reason for E85 if for natural resource reasons and less pollutants.

Thanks - I'd be tough for me to find anyway here in the DC area. I have a company gas card from Exxon and they don't sell it anyway. I'll stick to good 'ol 87 Octane.

Thanks
